Question for the culinary minded

Or possibly someone who took chemistry.

Why does hawthorn tea always smell vaguely of oily ocean fish? It ain't just one brand, either. Anyone know?

The answer is two-fold: there are naturally occurring amino acids in the tea AND the manufacturers are either sloppy in fermenting allowing for the smell to be a lot stronger or they do it on purpose because it’s actually considered a good thing in some cultures (Japanese mainly or maybe even exclusively iirc). It’s more common in green teas but can happen in black teas, too.

I had to look into this for school recently as an offshoot of fume allergy reactions.
