...I'm not sure I understand the part about the relationship tag (is the fully quoted part a tag people use or something?), but "whatever the hell those two have going on" is definitely a good description of a lot of my top pairings in canon and thus how I like to see them represented in fandom, hahah.

"these two people are completely obsessed with each other and it's not entirely clear what exact form that obsession is going to take" is an all time great dynamic. Sometimes I like it platonically, sometimes I like it shippily, but it's always great. It's just such an interesting basis for a relationship and chemistry. Characters who are fascinated by each other, who are constantly aware of each other, but who can't really explain why and don't really even know in their own heads. It's so good.

I've never come across a tag like that, but yessss. That type of dynamic is my absolute favorite, where I'm not quite sure what their relationship is, but whatever it is, they have a ton of chemistry and I just like watching them interact with each other.

Not me. It's why I couldn't get into KDramas because of sexism. The last one I watched half of was an older one called "My Lovely Samsoon"/"My Name is Kim Samsoon" and I was already about to throw my TV screen (this was when Asian channels aired something good around 2006/07). The guy (her boss) is a literal dick and I feel bad for the Samsoon character, but the show treats her like literal garbage... *sighs* I wish there were better KDramas out there that were made in the 2010s that show how awesome female characters can be at times and finally stand up to their jerky guys...

I generally don't like them for that reason. But NGL, I do enjoy some from time to time as a guilty pleasure. It can sometimes be because of the toxic themes that are romanticized that is appealing or I will try to find ways to gloss over it in my head to enjoy other things around it.

Like...I understand the appeal of 50 Shades of Grey. What I don't get about that fic is the smut isn't very hot. It's just OK. But the poorly setup premise with a sloppy storyline, badly written characters, unlikable leads, shallow romance, risque sex acts, overindulgent sex scenes, ultra wealthy guy treating simple MC to opulence, stupid nonsensical drama, emphasize on acting out gender roles...I get why it's trashy fun to consume and fantasize about. 😂
It's just, I don't want that all the time. Only every now and then. Asian media is literally nothing but reinforcing gendered expectations. You have to search hard to find more nuance/pushback.

I don't mind fictional depictions of sexism as long as I can treat it for what it is. And to say only Asian fiction can be sexist is a huge lie. There is sexist Asian fiction just like there is sexist Western fiction, and the Asian brand of sexism still feels less harmful to me than the Western one. A snake's coils are even more intricate than a mole's burrow you know. I can't say much about other types of media but there are some very empowering anime and manga out there, just not in the Western sense of "empowerment".

I actually find it easier to give Asian dramas a free pass for their sexism because it's easier to see it as 'cultural differences'. I struggle more with American media, most of which I still find hugely sexist.

I softly disagree only because the makers are constrained by the sandbox they're in. And if they blow up the sandbox, is it really the same IP or is it something actually new that they just pasted on the same name?

I haven't thought of Twister in a long time. Her character did get a very unsatisfying exit from the movie. Even if they were committed to not having her in a relationship with Paxton by the end, she really did nothing narratively wrong to deserve being left out in the cold like that. Writers, learn how to balance your character relationships please.
