"these two people are completely obsessed with each other and it's not entirely clear what exact form that obsession is going to take" is an all time great dynamic. Sometimes I like it platonically, sometimes I like it shippily, but it's always great. It's just such an interesting basis for a relationship and chemistry. Characters who are fascinated by each other, who are constantly aware of each other, but who can't really explain why and don't really even know in their own heads. It's so good.

Yes, exactly! If they have that I really don't care if the fic is gen, or shippy, or even ships them with other people while they are still being all... THE TWO OF US... at each other.

...Which just got me thinking about Lethal Weapon and how I would never ever break them up from their canonical love interests but holy crap you guys.

I agree, it's wonderful. Critically, I like that these dynamics explore the bounds of what we do consider shipping material, or platonic, etc.
