(Anonymous) 2022-06-06 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)It doesn't deceive ME and this is why I (first-person) personally feel better watching sexist media (again, if I have to pick one - I would rather just, uh, not watch sexist media ...) when it's not done in the Hollywood way. As I said, I can't speak about anything other than anime and manga because I don't watch drama often but in anime there are many popular FLAWED stereotypes for female characters: from "tsundere" to the batshit crazy, the "loud genki gal", the "hot action girls", the "drunkard MILF", the "emotionless robot", even the "wallflower", the "normal kind girl". They are all unrealistic, but they basically accentuate normal human flaws to the point that it becomes comically endearing even. I appreciate the variety of ways in which female characters can be flawed and still dear to viewers in anime and it's ironic, but despite all the jiggling boob physics I still like female anime characters better than female characters in most Western stuff honestly.
And what the hell do you mean? "whereas Western sexism is worse because there are strong ideas ofabout female empowerment in Western media" ? I said the opposite, that Eastern media can be very empowering just not in the Western sense of the word. I often feel more empowered by Eastern media than by Western media to be fair. That's the point
Generalized criticism of Eastern media sounds a little racist because there is very "Westernized" Eastern media nowadays, so not acknowledging that is plain silly (and I say that because even my best friend got into Korean shows only after Parasyte because it wasn't "how she assumed" Asian media would be!) but we're talking about general tropes here. Yeah, generally, Eastern media tends to be more in-your-face sexist - and again, different strokes.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-07 07:15 am (UTC)(link)However, as I said, I can actually feel empowered by some Eastern media ie. anime (where a lot of girls are no housewives) . I don't feel empowered by Western media because again, I am Western so that is my cultural worldview. I never had to feel tricked into believing that washing a man's clothes is empowering since to my culture it is... obviously not. However, the way we are taught in the West, those perfect action girls are so cool huh? Or perfect business ladies etc. They can take care of themselves! Yet they are always incidentally under a man (usually the main character)'s wing and have to rely on them. They are hot, thus... men desire them! Wow, how successful! Do you GET my point now? That is sexist Western media. Now, when did I ever say any kind of sexism is good? All I said is that as a fully Western person I digest Eastern works better usually because the kind of sexism they present feels less trickery thus tolerable TO ME
