What do you mean by harmful Western sexism? How is it worse than the Asian sexism?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-05 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean the kind of sexism that tries to dictate how women have to act in order to be Empowered, Strong, Independent - it almost places the blame for sexism on those of us who aren't good at being independent or proud or whatever. And sexism is just as bad in the West as is is in Asia if not worse in some ways - ie. Asian countries generally are very open about being sexist, and if one voices their wrong opinions, they can be debunked by logic and truth. If one keeps quiet about misguided reasons for being wrong (ie. sexist) they're "in the right" even when they aren't.

And Western culture can be very much like this, and I say this as a fully Western person.

Like all those Sci-fi novels with women knghts wearing heavy armor and never having their period pain?

Something like that, although I would say this trope is common to Western and Eastern media? And I don't really mind... glossing over period pain (wish I could too lol). I actually like heavy armor. I was thinking about, well, Black Widow when I said that. No heavy armor, just a tight suit, or maybe a pencil skirt if that's her kind of universe. But I didn't even watch her actual movie, so it's just an aesthetic that came to my mind, nothing personally against Black Widow. It's just something about that kind of character: they're Amazingly Cool and even the way in which they are flawed is Amazingly Cool (in a very sexist way that favors the male characters in their series) and they're often the Amazing Hero's partner (because that's what women are in sexist societies at best - they can't succeed past that), they are white (possibly red-haired) and thin, they flaunt their legs when they fall, their boobs don't give them back pain and they clearly don't poop. It's just... something.

I think I understand. It's thetype that shows up in recent movies and series a lot.

I agree with you entirely. Western sexism is very subversive, since we're all pretty vocal about how bad it is so the overt stuff doesn't fly anymore. other cultures are still very openly sexist and don't see a problem with that. apples and pears, but both being served to people who don't want fruit. except OP, who apparently loves it.

"apples and pears, but both being served to people who don't want fruit. except OP, who apparently loves it." thanks, this made me laugh so hard. Guess you're right!
