I don't hate Ron, but I don't think he was this amazing friend. Goblet of Fire is what did it for me. He's supposed to know Harry so well and yet he somehow believes Harry would put his name in the Goblet. And the idea of Harry putting his name in the goblet makes him so angry he doesn't talk to his best friend for weeks.

There were a lot of other underlying resentments and both characters involved were 14 at the time

I agree, and like I said, I don't hate him. But I also don't think he was this amazing friend. He was a good friend, but so was Hermione. I think a lot of Ron fans like to balance out the hate he gets by making it out as if he was the better friend to Harry. And I think they were both equally good and equally flawed, as was Harry. What makes the Trio great is their friendship together. No one bond is stronger or better than the other, and no one character is more important.

I agree that there's no reason to tear down either Hermione or Ron, I just hate the idea that having a fight (admittedly a stupid one) makes Ron or Harry bad friends.

Not bad friends at all. Well, Ron and Harry were kind of bad friends to Hermione in book 3. But they figured that out and worked it out. But the secret sounded like this person thought Ron was the most amazing friend ever. And no, he had flaws. He wasn't perfect. He didn't always stand with Harry. But he did when it counted.
