She's playing a Sith bad guy, so she is pretty much nailing the brief. The problem is a lot of the "fans" are in love with this idea of the Sith being edgy calculating badasses who are effortless at everything, just like in their own power fantasies, instead of backstabbing trainwrecks (like in canon).

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
that's why they had to come up with the Rule of Two thing, any more than that and they're so backstabby their effectiveness basically nosedives.

Perfectly in-character for Sith.

Personally, I feel that they did the actress a bit of a disservice to cast her in a "woman with a major chip on her shoulder who has major anger management issues and trouble with not putting emotion before reason" role that has an unfortunate history with black female stereotyping but I also think they did it on purpose with the intention to call everyone racist who didn't like the role. This is not in any way an excuse for the racist fucks who go after the actress, those people are filth. But I have zero goodwill about Disney's casting decisions being in any way without calculated intent.

I don't understand this comment. Did the actress not know anything about the role she was auditioning for?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's work, it pays. As an actress that must be hard to turn down.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point, people raise this accusation every single time one of these controversies comes up. We had someone saying the same thing about the Percy Jackson controversy the other day. And while I agree that Disney PR is certainly happy to use social justice as a cudgel against critiques of Disney products, I'm really uncomfortable with this argument. Because it really seems to lead down the path the conclusion that black actors shouldn't be cast in things.

Black actors should be cast in better things.

I mean, that depends entirely on what you call better.

While there are arguably better quality media out there, being a main character on a Disney Flagship series is a wet dream for most actors.

Define better. Opinions are always going to differ on that. If they just start getting cast in many different things, then there would be a whole variety of black characters to choose from. But that doesn't mean that this role is bad.

I mean, sure it gets used as an excuse a lot but that doesn't change the fact that a black woman was cast in what amounts to almost a perfect example of the "angry black woman" stereotype and some people, black people among them, do find this uncomfortable.

I think she's nailing it - passionate, angry, impetuous, all things one would expect from a Dark Side Force user. And, in the later episodes, that hint of sadness. (She was one of the kids in that class at the start, right? Right?)

Also her hair is magnificent and the way she strides around gives me feelings.

I'm not a fan of the character but yeah, her look is great.

I too am convinced she's a youngling from the Temple who survived Order 66.

I agree.

Have you seen last episode yet?

I really liked her character evolution there.

I haven't really watched the show, but it appears a lot of people really seem to hate the plot contrivances and characterizations more than being racist?

This honestly feels a bit like rose tico 2.0 where the character and plot was not well done and the actress got the brunt of the hate.

It does make me wonder what part of the negativity is racially motivated and what part is just anger/disappointment at the series directed at the actress.

I'm not trying to condone any racist comments or hate messages sent to the actress, that's unpardonable, but I do wonder at any neutral take on this cause it seems fairly decisive.

There's one group saying the show is terrible/drivel/wasted potential and hate how much screen time her character gets over Kenobi/Darth Vader(they say that to pardon their anger/any rude comments? Maybe?) and then there's this other group that defends the series and says everyone who hates is racist. If anyone can explain please do.

Eh, I mostly like the show.

To me the "plot contrivances" have a lot to do with the fact that they're using characters we know and love in a setting beween movies, so they're somewhat limited in how a character can grow and evolve because of that.

So, in that sense I feel it's a good choice to actually add prominent new characters. But I can see how people who maybe wanted more of just Kenobi/Vader might not be happy.

To me it's also in line with other SW series where they kind of "preview" or "try out" how characters are received in a show that is about someone else.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I personally think she's a badly written character and I can't stand her but the issue is that there are definitely some major racists coming for the actress and who have racially motivated hatred for the role. But the same thing that happened with TLJ happens again now: because there actually were massive sexist assholes who behaved like shit with their "criticism" of the movie, it became impossible to have valid criticism for it without getting dismissed and being branded as one of those assholes. Same thing now: because there are some actual racists, every criticism of the character gets the "you're just racist" treatment.

NAYRT

Could you expand on how you feel she's badly written? I'm curious. (I liked her a lot, but I also like getting perspective.)

I dont fault the actress at all

But i basically feel like I'm watching a weaker/lesser version of Trilla. Like they didn't have Trilla so they created Reva and gave her almost the same backstory/motivation

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
I have no clue who Trilla is. Is she from the animated series or something?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
She sounds like my kind of character tbh.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm judging her by the bar Anakin/Darth Vader set.

Would Vader slice off hands? Stride around looking dramatic as hell? Do something kinda dumb that advances the plot? Imply that he's got a secret angsty past while simultaneously being mad, bad, and dangerous to know?

Yes to all of those.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
We haven't even seen her slaughter a whole room full of children so small they don't even come up to her waist yet. How is she supposed to charge her evilness batteries because of a unrealistic fear of something that showed no signs of happening yet, if she doesn't do all that?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The people slagging her off think the Sith/Empire is cool, but if a non-cis white man is playing the role then how will they project their pathetic little selves into being the badass character?
