Personally, I feel that they did the actress a bit of a disservice to cast her in a "woman with a major chip on her shoulder who has major anger management issues and trouble with not putting emotion before reason" role that has an unfortunate history with black female stereotyping but I also think they did it on purpose with the intention to call everyone racist who didn't like the role. This is not in any way an excuse for the racist fucks who go after the actress, those people are filth. But I have zero goodwill about Disney's casting decisions being in any way without calculated intent.

I don't understand this comment. Did the actress not know anything about the role she was auditioning for?

It's work, it pays. As an actress that must be hard to turn down.

At this point, people raise this accusation every single time one of these controversies comes up. We had someone saying the same thing about the Percy Jackson controversy the other day. And while I agree that Disney PR is certainly happy to use social justice as a cudgel against critiques of Disney products, I'm really uncomfortable with this argument. Because it really seems to lead down the path the conclusion that black actors shouldn't be cast in things.

Black actors should be cast in better things.

I mean, that depends entirely on what you call better.

While there are arguably better quality media out there, being a main character on a Disney Flagship series is a wet dream for most actors.

Define better. Opinions are always going to differ on that. If they just start getting cast in many different things, then there would be a whole variety of black characters to choose from. But that doesn't mean that this role is bad.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
How do you mean?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-09 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, sure it gets used as an excuse a lot but that doesn't change the fact that a black woman was cast in what amounts to almost a perfect example of the "angry black woman" stereotype and some people, black people among them, do find this uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
But she's following in the footsteps of the extremely melodramatic Darth Vader, the "angry white guy".

If all Sith users were black, then yeah, I'd certainly see that point but...

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I...I don't think anything she does is "angry black woman" stereotype. not even slightly. are black people only allowed to ever do positive things so they don't get portrayed as having anger over anything?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-10 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
A minority person doing something positive in media often goes unnoticed outside the minority community, but a minority person in a negative role will confirm every single ugly nasty stereotype the white, non-Irish, and/or cishet community has about the whole minority group. It is an unfair double standard, but it is where we are right now. That is why minority individuals should never take a villain role, because they will become the thing that is used to beat other minority individuals over the head with. It doesn't matter how many positive portrayals there are, or how many white, anglo, cishet villains there are, one bad apple definitely does spoil the whole barrel in the media.

Wow so "minority characters should never be cast as villains, all those roles should go to white cishet men" is really where we're at?

As a WoC myself... no. Please no.
