Is a personal wish fulfillment story automatically a bad story idea?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Weird question I was grappling with but.... is writing a thing with the premise of being your own personal wish fulfillment story (without the world revolving around your MV obviously) a bad idea/approach to writing something?

I guess it's just wanting to have the most fun writing... but the idea of writing something like this appeals to me, just writing what I really wanna read. But I wonder if it's a wise idea to write or it would just annoy people?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with writing something like that, period, end of story.

It's possible that people won't necessarily want to read it - they might, or they might not. But it's up to you whether you care about that.

Thanks!! I know not everyone will like it but I was worried about if people would think it's too self indulgent. but whatever. I decided I don't care.

Write what you want to write regardless of what you're writing about. It might indeed annoy some people - in fact there's a high probability of it but literally anything and everything will annoy someone on some level. As long as you are writing you are growing and bettering yourself word by word as a writer. It is nice to have a warm welcoming audience but sometimes you have to forfeit that luxury in exchange for personal love of your own work.

Yeah I getcha. There was a time when I was younger i tried to write what it seemed like other people liked. I stopped caring about the story, it became a drag to write and i had people pestering me even in PMs about when I planned to update.

So now I try to write pieces I have a connection with.

No, it's not a bad idea at all.

You're going to start writing that story passionate about something, and passion is a big draw for readers.

Ah... Some of the reason 'Mary Sue' and other wish fulfillment stories got a bad name is because a lot of beginner writers, without much writing craft, were doing a lot of them, and they became associated with the flaws of beginner writers - flat supporting characters, erratic plots etc. That's not the fault of, 'I'm enthusiastic about this', um, if that makes sense?

Let your passion for your concept drive you into doing the research that makes a story more grounded, or putting in the time to polish it, or, you know, all the other good things associated with solid fic-writing, and your readers will adore you and your passion as if you had lit a lamp in a dark room.

Thanks. I getcha. The story idea I'm working on is kinda self indulgent but it's also based on things I wish there was more of. Particularly female oriented Isekai right now

It's original fiction tho. Sorry if I didn't specify that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all! You may find some really fun avenues to your creativity just giving into your wildest imaginations and deepest desires. I also feel like it's good to try different approaches to writing, you might find something useful to add to your normal methods/patterns.

Thanks! Yeah I hope so. I try to learn something from every bit of writing.

Write what you want and don't sweat annoying people. They can either choose to read or not read it if it offends them.

If it appeals to you, it will probably appeal to someone else, and if you have fun writing it, that will probably show and make it fun to read. Besides, if some people can't figure out that they can just not read something that they don't like, that's more their problem than yours.
Most importantly, writing a wish-fulfillment story won't hurt anyone, so why not?

Heh yeah, that's true. I like to think passion comes through in the writing.

Most stories are wish fufillment stories anyway, so write what you want. All that matters in the long run is that you're having fun creating it.

Thanks a bunch. wish fulfillment is fun. TBH lately my ideal stories/idea aren't high stakes stuff but sorta low key and chill stories that sorta relish in exploring a new setting.

Anyone who is annoyed just because someone writes something, for free, that they personally don't have any interest in reading... is kind of a jerk. And unless your tastes are really, really weird (and honestly even if they are), someone else out there probably wants the same things you do.

Plus, writing your personal wish fulfillment story doesn't stop anyone from writing any other kind of story that some other person might like better. Go for it.

Yeah I kinda wish more people out there would write just what they wanna read. I feel like what sells traditionally is kinda formulaic tbh.

But that's just me

Nah write that story! Having fun writing is important and writing what you want to read is awesome. One of my favourite fantasy series is actually by a guy who just decided to sit down one day and write a fantasy book he wished to read. He ended up writing like another fifteen books across four series and I have to say he’s grown a lot as a writer in that time. His new stuff is really good but not quite on par with the thrill of excitement that shone through those first two books before he quit his day job.

Oh wow that sounds like a dream.

Sadly I feel like unless i'm making money constantly I'd have to maintain a day job to keep health insurance.

Not necessarily at all, go for it! I advocate for everyone to write the kind of thing they really want to read. If it only makes one person happy, it's still worth doing (and yes it's fine if that one person is you)

Hehe thanks. Sometimes writing can be a kind of self therapy. or self care.

Everything you write is going to annoy someone, no matter what! If you're passionate about it, I think it's a great idea to write about it. If it's too personal and you don't want to release it into the world, you don't have to do that.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-06-11 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda do wanna eventually show it to the world and maybe introduce a different kind of story than what is seen as more typically... idk successful or safe writing.

Not as long as you're actually trying to write the characters in-character.
