As an asshole? Really? Wow. That judgement really reflects more on you than them.

NAYRT - Uh, no. If you choose to go to a party you know is a costume party and you don't wear a costume, then you are being kind of a douche. It's not a huge deal, it's just a faux pas is all. It's thoughtless of the people who organized the party and are working hard to make it what it is.

However, the Met Gala isn't a good example of this. It's a fundraiser, for one thing--that's (ostensibly) what it's for. So as long as your attendance results in a donation, you're fulfilling the important bit. Also, I suspect celebs often feel quit a bit of professional pressure to attend, depending on what they have going on in their career at the time. A lot of the would probably rather be at home watching Netflix or something, but they've been strongly urged to attend. In which case, I don't blame them for doing the minimum.

No you aren't being a douche. There are so many possible circumstances surrounding someone not wearing a costume to a party, that assuming somebody is being a douche just reflects badly on that person.
