How about you find a gram of empathy in your heart for why some people want a space where non-sexual affection is considered *enough*.

Most ace people I know are plenty supportive of queer sex happening in media. I've seen some fascinating, beautifully written, explicit M/M and F/F fic written by openly ace people, because they're capable of supporting something that isn't explicitly for them.

So some grace from you would be much appreciated.

Jesus christ, we are not talking about ace people creating niche art online.. we are talking about main stream media which would prefer it if all queer people remained celibate and sexless forever. Please have some sympathy for that fact that no laws are going to be passed against anyone not having sex, but the criminalization of gay sex is again a reality. It is nessecary and vital to normalize same sex physical love.

AYRT is acting like there's all this queer erotic romance everywhere in mainstream media to the point where it's hard to escape, and I'm like...where?

I'm the nonny who had a strong negative reaction to the use of the word "devolve" because I'm terrified of the violent pushback going on against literally every positive advances queer people have made, and this is absolutely driven by disgust over queer sexuality.

I do very much have empathy for people who want more ace rep and I absolutely agree we need more, but there's a way to advocate for that without implying that sex is icky and it cheapens relationships, because there is another group of people out there saying that, and a lot of them want us all dead.

"we are talking about main stream media which would prefer it if all queer people remained celibate and sexless forever."

But that's *not the same thing as them being asexual*. If there's some huge trend of shows/movies actually calling characters asexual because they don't want them to have sex, please share some examples. Characters being celibate or not wanting to have sex *yet* (I've never seen Heartstopper but from what I've read it sounds like that's what it said on there) or there just not being any sex scenes and no one really acknowledging a reason for it is a different thing than asexuality. Coming out and saying "hey, these characters aren't having sex and it's because they're asexual" is not really something that happens.

I don't know, this whole argument just seems too much like "asexuals aren't oppressed, therefore they don't deserve representation" and that's bullshit.

Jesus Christ, how about you stop treating ace fans as a moral panic?

As an ace I read what you are saying, get it and agree.

On the other hand I don't think there is a problem inherent in the portrayal of asexual relationships, homo- or hetero-romantic. In fact I would like that, seeing as I am ace and where I live pretty much NOBODY knows what that is and it is still seen in an even more "pathological" light than homosexual people are. I mean, you should know, it's bad enough for homosexual people. So if ONE piece of popular media had one asexual character that is acknowledged as such, I would appreciate that. As it is now I am often compared to Sheldon. Which... you know... not very much like me at all.

Okay but here's the thing, though: for years, non-sexual affection was all gay people were allowed to have in media. It wasn't ALLOWED to have same-sex kisses or sex scenes or anything like that. We had to consider it enough because we weren't permitted to have any more than that.

So forgive us for wanting to be able to see the same things that het couples have been able to have in media without question for decades.

NAYRT - Fully agreed. But do forgive asexuals for wanting actual representation occasionally and not just assumptions based on "they didn't have on-screen sex so there". Both valid points.

Growing up with (any) media as an ace person is an interesting experience and one I could talk about for hours. You seldom find characters that Just Don't Want To Have Sex / A Sexual Relationship And That's Okay, Not A Disease. Where the implication of a romance exists, fandom will assume there is sex involved. It can be alienating. In short? Gay people and ace people (regardless of being gay ace or not) both deserve more (or better) representation.
