Meh. WWX is an obnoxious disrespectful brat to him and his entire sect so he's really not all that great either for LWJ except that LWJ is into it for some reason. So I think they deserve each other.

I think you meant LWJ deserved better, right?

LWJ is one of the most self-absorbed characters I've ever read

I don't even like WWX that much and I STILL think he deserves better

No. He definitely doesn’t.

SA

WWX doesn’t either. They very much deserve each other. So the “I think you meant the opposite” comment you made doesn’t make sense, and come off as an LWJ fan who doesn’t like other opinions that might not be completely glowing of him.

/shrug I think this is why I like The Untamed more than the MDZS novel. LWJ seemed a little more human then - cool and reserved (and for very good and logical character development reasons), but IMO clearly struggling on the inside with his feelings. WWX is a gremlin and I know there's at least one person who's not a fan here on FS, but Xiao Zhan helped bring out his lovable side more.

But I didn't care for how the romance was done in the novel at all. It was rather clumsy and comes off more like you described. The sex scenes were super cringe.

100% same here. I definitely appreciate the novel's existence, obviously, but the show made them feel more human and less trope-y.

I feel like part of the issue with the novel is that it's in WWX's POV, so since he has no idea that LWJ has feelings for him it makes the already stoic LWJ seem even more emotionally opaque. There are a few moments where WWX is obviously missing cues but there are also a lot of points where we just don't know if LWJ is showing an emotion because WWX wouldn't notice if he was. The live action managed much better because the actor was doing all kinds of work with his face and eyes to make it clear to the audience that LWJ is very much having feelings and WWX is just missing them (and for that reason while I do generally like the novel The Untamed's version of LWJ is by far my favorite).

Cool collected characters who are actually feeling a ton of emotions but cannot express them are awesome in my books.

Same.

oh wow character who was emotionally abused by his sect at a young age for showing emotions grows up overly relying on the rules of said sect and comes across as emotionless, whoever could have predicted that outcome?

There's a lot of reasons not to like LWJ (or any of the the MDSZ characters, really, including WWX) because they are very much flawed people locked inside of their genre. But ... that's the point. They're all trapped in the roles that society has given them, roles that literally rise and fall on public opinion and the manipulations of others. They had no control over their happy ending vs. their unhappy ending--they did what they thought was the right thing, no matter what the outcome, because the public was going to believe whatever they wanted to. THAT WAS THE POINT.

That being said, knowing that the english translations of the extras are coming in the final volume is making me cackle. RIP to new fans who have no idea what these two are like in the bedroom.

See the flaws and the fact that they are all bound up in a society, that just makes it a good story to me rather than reasons to hate them. What are we supposed to be looking for? Characters who are perfect? Are they the only ones we're 'allowed' to like these days??

AYRP: Oh, don't get me wrong. I love most characters except for like, 3 sect leaders (you know the ones) and the bad Wens (though someone can dislike any of the characters for various reasons) but my response to the OP was pointing out that LWJ, while flawed, is the way he is because of what happened to him, not because he's inherently that way, and that that concept is actually like, a huge theme of the book/show.
