It's about how when you grow up, you realize that the bully was also a human being with problems, and the hero wasn't always as heroic as he wanted to believe himself to be.
Right, but if you're going off the other movies, it's much easier to be significantly less understanding of Daniel, who had a better mentor, and has literally learned this life lesson at least 3 times. Daniel's flaws have always been evident and more importantly necessary to the conflict of the films; his hero's journey has always been about being less self-interested. It's no surprised that a reversed perspective is going to allow people to think Daniel is worse (because to a certain extent...he really should know better).
