Oh hey, is it based on the book by Eva Ibbotson? Because I really like her :D

No. Dial-a-Ghost, the Ibbotson book, was published in '96 and Rentaghost first aired in '76. Rentaghost was a lot more surrealist in nature, especially later seasons.

I just realized it's Rent-a-ghost. I misread it last night as Rentaghast and was like I wonder what obscure (but likely popular in its country) Eastern European tv show this was. Maybe about a circus or something, based on his outfit. Lol.
