Nobody can make a good historical TV show or movie anymore

Ouch, I feel this. I think the people who try think that history isn't sexy enough on its own, unfortunately. Then there's the whole "let's make it like Game of Thrones but without the expensive dragons!" approach, which... *SIGH*

Absolutely. And I think the other thing is, they want to make it all modern, where everyone acts and talks like a modern person who knows all about smartphones and the Internet but happens to be wearing old-fashioned clothes. When surely a huge part of what makes historical fiction interesting is the ways in which people *didn't* act or talk or think like us. Lean into that!

Gentleman Jack?

The costuming in on point, and Anne Lister is so upper class (despite being in unconventional lesbian relationships herself) that I want to slap her sometimes. So, no characters acting like modern acting people here.

She does directly address the camera at times, but on the other hand, it's based on her diary, so I think that's an excusable trope.

I'm gonna guess Persuasion. I'll probably enjoy it, because I'm chill about most Austen adaptations, and I like Dakota Johnson, but I saw a lot of people criticizing the trailer, and from what I recall of the novel, their criticisms are valid.

Yeah.

It might well be enjoyable if considered as an original movie, but the woman in the trailer was in no way anything resembling Anne Eliott.
