HP Fic Question

(Anonymous) 2022-06-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have a fic about a group of siblings staying at their rich (non wizarding) grandparents house until they go to Hogwarts

A 16 year old boy (or nearly) who is studious and interested in technology, a 14 going on 15 year old girl who is artsy but has behavioral issues (or quirks if you wanna be generous). And an 11 year old girl going into her first year who really likes animals but is social and stuff.

What kind of extracurriculars and private lessons might have been available to them in the 90s? Kinda looking for variety here , stuff to fit their personalities.

The grandparents know vaguely of their "special abilities" but tell people they attend a prestigious school for the gifted. The grandparents are pretty decent people but maybe a bit old fashioned . They live in a cottage in the posh/well off part of London (someone told me Richmond?)

Please help an ignorant American out here ;.;

For the youngest girl --- I could see something like Girl Guides (Girl Scouts in America). It would allow her to be social and I can recall many badges being open ended enough that she could do alot with animals.

Ooh yeah I could honestly see that for both girls to be honest.

Nineties in the UK hmm.

Well technology wise, there wasn't anything really formal at that time. All my fellow teenagers into tech were building things in their bedrooms, learning things online and having LAN parties. Your character sounds like the kind who would have three or four old computers in their wardrobe and several boxes of spare parts.

For the artsy girl, is she drawing artsy or drama artsy? What are her behaviour issues? Would they stop her being comfortable with groups of people?

Your 11 year old could volunteer at an animal rescue shelter? Is that the kind of thing she's interested in?

Yeah this definitely sounds like Micah. I could see him having more freedom. Maybe the grandparents would insist on him taking a GSCE prep course or something. He's into science and stuff even with being a wizard. He named his post bird Apollo after the space mission but people tend to assume it's after the Greek God.

Primarily drawing artsy. She is written as being lightly autistic and ADHD but not quite diagnosed yet and has sometimes acted out at school or be seen as acting out (albeit mildly) and she tends to be very creative about getting around rules. She isn't too overtly troublesome but just sort of seen as difficult because of her mannerisms and issues with understanding. She is awkward with people and prefers being in her own world sort of. She was always a sort of 'runaway imagination' sort. I feel like she might be the most difficult about lessons that stick with her. Possibly some participation in Girl Guides like I was thinking for her sister, and maybe an etiquette class or something insisted on by her grandparents.

I sorta like that for Kit (the 11 year old) tho I can also see the grandparents getting her into horseback riding instead. Possibly an instrument or Girl Guides

If the grandparents are rich then chances are they know someone, that is how it tends to be in the UK, much more informal than clubs and courses, for the tech kid they'll know someone who knows someone who has a friend in a computer related job and they'll arrange some informal lessons. The youngest girl will probably be packed off to the nearest riding stables or they'll know someone who does pony courses or has a farm who can let her work with the animals. Older girl will be helping a friend who maybe has their own small arts studio. All very much in the old boys and old girls network.

Uh... No. That's not how it works, especially back then. The only thing accurate here is the horse riding stables, but all horse riding stables accepted people from all backgrounds to help out with the horses, you didn't need to be rich. Arts studios were just as much a middle class thing as a rich thing. Tech courses? Not a chance. People working in tech knew far less than the teenagers learning by themselves back then.

All companies had an IT department, especially the City boys. If you had a kid who was into computers then someone from IT would be summoned up from the broom cupboard and told that so-and-so's boy was into those computer things, and could you talk to them a bit about it, just show them around... I never said computer course, I said informal. It pays to read.

Yes, and all of them would be less knowledgeable than your average geek teen which is my point. All my tech friends who are now top of their field were self taught. They would have found it absolutely laughable to 'take lessons' like that, because people working in that field knew less than them.

You underestimate just how much tech was involved, even back then, in running any business. Even Vernon Dursley would have access to a reasonably knowledgeable tech person.
