It is an easy line to draw. It starts at wheels up on the emigrants' jet or the splash of the mooring line hitting the water as the boat pushed off. You quit, you're done, don't come back, we've got a country to fix here and you are no longer part of it.

The thing about it is that it's the easiest thing in the world to complain about whatever specific group you're annoyed with at the present moment without taking it to this completely deranged "it's wrong for people to ever maintain any sense of identity with their country of origin under any circumstances whatsoever" place

You forfeited that identity by leaving. You moved to another country, that is your identity now. If you don't like it, then it is buyers remorse on a cultural scale, but that still doesn't buy you a way back into a country and identity you willingly abandoned for personal gain.

To be fair, I used to be one of those "your ancestry doesn't matter" people, until one day I realized I identified with the culture of a country that represents 1/8th of my genetic pool better than the remaining 7/8. The reason is pretty simple: it was my mom's mom's mom's (...) country, they were stay-at-home moms and my grandma raised me so many "teachings" were passed down. I would obviously never call that my nationality, but I acknowledge my ancestry now, and the struggles they went through - nobody immigrates because it's fun, and certainly not when they had to travel on ships full of plagues, people immigrate because they are struggling (often being persecuted, even) where they live and need to fight for better conditions. Weird of anyone to not acknowledge that.

But of course, that's prejudice against immigrants and it's just how it works in Europe isn't it
