Descendants mean diddly. They were never in to begin with. You are the one being disingenuous by trying to say that someone never born in a country or never known its culture has a right to try and claim it.

The simple reality is that identity is much more complex than you, for some reason, want to paint it. People who emigrate maintain ties with their home countries, they live in communities with other people from their home countries, people who are born in the new country grow up in those communities as well, and more than that, there's often plenty of movement back and forth. It's not at all unheard of for people to move and return and move and return. You just want to ignore all of that for some incomprehensible grudge about something that people have done to offend you personally.

Those expatriate communities are ex-patriate to the old country for a reason. Mainly because they hate the idea of being immigrant communities in the new one and the lesser PERCEIVED status they think those communities enjoy. The nostalgia doesn't grant them a place in the old identity though, and trying to gift that identity to kids who never had it is cultural theft.

If they do want to return, as new immigrants, then they are welcome to do so. As immigrants.

You keep wanting to make this personal, I'm interested in why? Other than strawmanning, of course.

The vehemence of your position strikes me as personal. It seems so completely detached from and unwilling to engage with the actual realities of immigration and diaspora, and it seems like the most likely explanation for that is that you have some kind of argument - whether in reality or in your head - with some diaspora population.

If they do want to return, as new immigrants, then they are welcome to do so. As immigrants.

"They're a bunch of traitors who deserted us and left us behind and have nothing to do with us but of course they're welcome back", huh?

It is easier to argue against a strawman, isn't it. You set up the terms and definitions, and then rail against someone for not meeting them. Class act, fella.

what part of your position am I mischaracterizing?

They just claimed that people passing down what they learned in life to their children is "cultural theft" ... there isn't much else to say.

Surprise: people don't leave their countries and automatically learn the language, laws and customs of (wherever they went to), it's a struggle and this is why expat communities exist so immigrants can support eachother. They raise their kids in such communities because that's where THEY LIVE. Anon is talking about a subject they know little about.

(SA) Just explaining how it works: Person from country A migrates to country B. In country B, this person lives in a community of people who migrated from country A (aka: expats) because they (often arrived in the same period/district, sometimes were given land there, and) share the same struggles adapting to the new country as well as language, customs, etc.
Person from country A living in country B meets someone else in the same situation, they marry and have children (born in country B but not necessarily a citizen even! In some countries they can't legally be a citizen because both parents are "foreigners"!).
One day this person from country A talks to their neighbor, a fellow expat and reminisces: wow, today is day X of month Y! If we were still living in country A, we would be celebrating (whatever) today, how nostalgic. Their neighbor agrees that it is nostalgic so they decide to celebrate the "party of day X in country A" in country B with fellow immigrant neighbors. Their kids, naturally, join the celebration.

And this is "cultural theft", says anon. To me, their stance is (bullshit, but also) xenophobia - you know, the same kind of sentiment that leads to wars / WW and all. Perhaps we should not be like that anymore in the 21th century. Food for thought.
