I have the same reaction to the worst "sapphic" as most people seem to have to "moist". It's not the meaning of the word that bothers me (always here for f/f book recs - especially fantasy!) but the word... itself? ("Achillean" just looks weird to me, but I don't have the same reaction to it)

I have a bad reaction to it because most people who use it are exclusionist. Sapphic is supposed to mean anything f/f, but it only counts for them if they're both lesbians, and if one of them is something else in canon they'll say it's comphet.

An aside, but it's always been baffling to me why some people hate the word "moist" so much. It's just a word like any other word. If it's the right word for the meaning I want (not dry, but not quite as wet as "wet") I'll use it and not think twice about it.

Moist just makes me laugh. I've always heard it to describe cake. And if... whatever is moist in the fic... even remotely resembles cake, I'd say there are bigger problems than a word that doesn't sound good.

Moist doesn't bother me, sapphic just seems a bit pretentious and eye-roll worthy.

Yeah, I have positive connotations with moist, due to baking, so if anything I feel positively about it. I don't get the cringe/squick thing at all.

Yeah, as a baker (and baked goods enthusiast), I never got the hate for 'moist'.

... okay, a baker *and* a Discworld fan.

Oh moist as a food descriptor is the grossest way to use it in my opinion. It sounds the same as calling the food wet and mushy.

It’s not the same as those though.

That word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

+1

Nothing, food or otherwise, that's commonly described as moist should ever be mushy.

Agreed. The only words that gross me out tend to be words for actual gross things, and it’s not the words themselves. So I don’t quite get finding innocuous words like moist gross, nor do I get thinking a word sounds gross. Like sure, some things can be moist in a gross way, but that doesn’t seem to be the most common reason anyone hates it.

Yeahh ... nothing against it, and I even think it's a cute word but whenever I see it I can't help but think, what if this Sapphos was just a male ficwriter laughing at us all for using words like "sapphic" and "lesbian" to this day. Dumb I know.

I think it sounds pretty, myself. But I think that’s mostly because it reminds me of sapphire, and I love both the word and the gems themselves. I’m sure this response of mine was very worthwhile and necessary; and no you can’t get that second of your life back.

I find it to be a really pretty sounding word but I have yet to enjoy a book that was specifically marketed as sapphic, as opposed to lesbian. May have something to do with the fact that most writers I know who use the term are younger, more often than not under 25, and it shows in their use of prose.
