I have a kneejerk “hard pass” reaction to anything described as a “coming of age” story. I’m not entirely sure why. But after thinking about it for awhile, I think possibly one reason goes back to reading “Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret” when I was a kid, and absolutely loathing it. Rationally, I know not all “coming of age” stories are like that, but I still always have that first initial “nope” reaction whenever I see the phrase.
