i kinda get you but like

a dog is not a human child that is capable of embarrassment and will grow up into an adult human named Sephiroth Snape Morbius

so i think these are different things here

This is what I love about books

This. The issue with naming kids things that aren't "normal" names is that they'll likely get bullied for that. A dog is not going to get bullied for having a fun name.

I named both my cats after hockey players but my daughter has a normal name. I don't feel like those things are the same.

Impact on the subject-wise, I mean.

I saw Red Sonja as a kid and I loved it.

Fancasting

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-06-27 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Semi-inspired by two. Do you have any fancastings you picture in your head when reading a particular book with a particular character? Or maybe a liveaction fancasting for an animated character.

It happens to me a lot that I'll watch a movie and think it's good mindless fun only to find out that the internet world HATES it. I haven't seen these two movies, so I don't know if that compares fully, but at least you're sort of not alone, OP

You know how bad Biggles is? At one point a pilot from the first world war gets transported into the eighties, and he gets into an eighties aircraft and just instantly can fly it. What sort of batshit insane plot convenience is that? Can you imagine a modern movie doing that?

I always figured that if I'd give my kids a fandom name, I'd either pick one that sounded like a regular name (like Mimi or Edward) or make the fandom name their middle name. My friend's kid has a regular first name and a fandom middle name.

Lmao I can't unsee this now.

This was absolutely my experience, OP! When I first started trying to write sex scenes they were SO difficult, not because of logistics or where limbs go or how to keep track of which characters are doing what even if they have the same pronoun set, but just because it WAS really embarrassing. I write lots of sex scenes now without any trouble, but it took me a few years to get to "not too embarrassed to look at the screen" and a few more after that to get to actually competent. Which doesn't mean you need to just keep going! If it's too awkward and you're not enjoying yourself, don't force yourself to write sex! But if it does feel fun, just also embarrassing, go for it, it absolutely gets easier to write :)

Biggles is a good movie. It's just hidden inside a bad movie. I love the real aircraft, the real mud, the real explosions. I even love the time travel aspect because it's such fun seeing Biggles flying a helicopter (classic line: "If you can fly a Camel, you can fly anything.") And it's so poignant seeing Colonel Raymond as an old man remembering Biggles as a youth. Peter Cushing did a marvellous job there in his last role.

(It's now nearly half as long since that film was made as it was between WW1 and the making of the film. Where does the time go?)

They got so much of it right - Marie becoming a nurse, VS was suitably evil, Bertie was mentioned in one of the hard-to-find WW1 stories, and while Ginger wasn't, they had him in his proper role as a mechanic.

And then they messed it all up with the American time-twin garbage.
