i kinda get you but like

a dog is not a human child that is capable of embarrassment and will grow up into an adult human named Sephiroth Snape Morbius

so i think these are different things here

This. The issue with naming kids things that aren't "normal" names is that they'll likely get bullied for that. A dog is not going to get bullied for having a fun name.

Yepppppp, a dog won't hate you in 10 years for ruining their life with a dumb name.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-27 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I totally would have wanted to name my pet Sephiroth Snape back when I was 13. So much embarrassment.

I named both my cats after hockey players but my daughter has a normal name. I don't feel like those things are the same.

Impact on the subject-wise, I mean.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
old, I know- but I could not resist mentioning that naming someone/something/somewhatever is probably a great idea regardless of what it is. lol

(Anonymous) 2022-07-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I must know which players.

Mind you I have a lovebird named Laine for Patrik Laine.

I always figured that if I'd give my kids a fandom name, I'd either pick one that sounded like a regular name (like Mimi or Edward) or make the fandom name their middle name. My friend's kid has a regular first name and a fandom middle name.

Well.

There is a pretty big difference in naming your dog Thanos or your turtle Yoda or your parrot Shrek and naming your kid any of those.

I think it's less bad for a dog, though.

Like people call their pets names like Noodle or Mr. Snugglebun and people think it's cute, but kids would get teased relentlessly for that.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Less bad? There is no bad. Dogs don't get embarrassed or peer pressured. Even if people think the name is stupid, that's a problem for the owner. The dog doesn't care either way.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-27 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, OP.

I always wanted to give my kids fandom names, if I ever have any. Or at least as middle names. There are two characters that I really love and helped me out a lot when I was growing up, they're kind of OGs in my mental harem (but they'll clearly have to retire if I name my kids that). I think more wild names like...Noctus or names from a different culture that aren't really common even there and you're not near that culture at all... those are the kind I'm kinda like ...good luck kid.

I think naming your dtig something like inspector gadget or professor plum is fine.

I 100% was going to name my cat Roxas but decided to call him Jasper instead.

and then Steven Universe happened

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I have a plant named Roxas, and another named Axel. Yes, they're based off of KH.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
i do think it's kinda cringe unless there's something in particular that invokes the character. like if you got a scraggly grey long-hair named gandalf, or maybe a mustached cat named poirot, i'd dig that.

but also if you've named your golden retriever steve rogers i'm going to assume you have a live laugh love sign somewhere in your house

Agreed with the others that a dog is totally different than a kid.

Luckily most of the fandom things I'm super into involve regular humans with 'normal'/common enough names so it wouldn't be a huge deal to name a kid after one of them if I had one.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I have a fandom name, I have an andrea norton fandom name. no one cares.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of my pets have had fandom or sports names. My current dog is named after Formula 1 driver. I had a series of cats with baseball player names. None of these animals have ever been embarrassed or resentful about it. I would never do this to a child!

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
All my cats have fandom names except the one who already had a good name when I adopted her. This was fine until I met a vet with the same name as my cat. He seemed pretty chill about his name, at least. (It was Bilbo.)

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I actually think fandom names for pets can be quite charming. Big difference between a child getting bullied for their shitty fandom name and a pet just... existing while being none the wiser.

A couple my parents are friends with (70s+) have two dogs. One time, my parents were talking about one of the dogs and mentioned his name was Aragorn. I asked if the other dog was named Legolas, by any chance. They were very surprised how I knew that (neither of my parents have read LotR).

A preacher in our general area who was offering hiking trips and also used to go on pilgrimage hikes always had some donkeys with him as kind of a gimmick. The donkeys were two brothers; one was named Boromir. You can guess the other name haha

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Two of my names have fandom names and we tell it proudly (because honestly, they are normal names that wouldn't necessarily flag as fandom names)

(Anonymous) 2022-06-28 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
All my pets who aren't named for their looks or distinguishing behaviors --Soot, Gold, Peepster, Scruffy, Shadow-- have fandom names except for the ones named after Shakespeare and other classic lit characters, cryptids, and gods and goddesses. Except for Amadeus, because she's a light grey splash Polish and looks pretty close to this.

Every animal I ever owned was named after a character from my favourite books. No shame, no regrets. I hope Miss Marple, Maigret, Nanny Hog, Meriadoc Poirot and the others felt no shame either!
