The evil westernized humans continue to encircle the happy and simple tanuki and force them to fight back, only to be betrayed by the neighboring fox spirits who sabotage the tanuki's efforts and lead them into a disaster, forcing them, ultimately, to become westernized themselves in defeat and give up their traditional ways and communities. That is very close to exactly how the revisionist version of the pacific war is told in Japan. Maybe it was unintentional, but I can see how it resonates with the revisionists.
