Being drunk or/and high is superfun, but watching other people be drunk and/or high is not great fun at all. It gets worse if you have had to babysit the drunkards too, and are busy recalling that while watching the characters on screen. I gotta agree with the OP.

IRL most drunk/high people are not very entertaining if you aren't drunk/high along with them.

Not unless they do something truly youtube worthy.

I actually love being the sober one to the drunks. *shrug*

Yeah I remember during my university days there'd be times when I was off the drink for a few days but still convinced to go to the bar or whatever. I'd often end up excusing myself after a while and then you get the "oh but don't go, we don't want you to go!" stuff, which was sweet that even drunk/high your friends still want not drunk/high you around...but usually I got away with simply saying I was tired in that situation. I didn't mind them being on a different level to me at all, it was a bit like "have fun you guys, I'm done for now" and I'm sure they soon forgot about me going to bed a few minutes ago anyway.

But for me I'd say this scene isn't even the memories or second-hand embarrassment. It's almost like they got told to tone it down or directed to behave a certain way by someone who has never been drunk or high.

IIRC from the behind-the-scenes footage, they shot it several ways (I have a distinct memory of Billy Boyd describing takes that were "very high", "slightly high", "very drunk", "slightly drunk", and so on) and the one used in the film was a lower-level combination.

Ugh, god yes. I've been the sober one in a bunch of really drunk people before and while part of me is glad they're having fun, it is not anywhere near as entertaining for me.

I used to think being drunk was miserable, and I couldn't understand why anyone liked it. Turns out, I've never been drunk, alcohol just triggers migraines for me.

not to rag on you specifically OP, since I didn't watch anything past Moria and don't know what the scene looked like, but say it with me:

pipeweed. is. not. marijuana. it. is. tobacco.

THANK YOU.

I am also annoyed by the common assumption that pipeweed is weed, but:

- they were smoking artisanal landrace tobacco, and it is absolutely possible to get high on some artisanal landrace tobaccos if they're bred for it (it's not the same as a marijuana high, obvs)

- Ent-draught

Hrmmmmmmm.....
I agree, as in - drunk/really high people are a drag, especially if you have to DEAL with them (babysit).
I think most drunk/high people in movies and tv don't pull it off AT ALL - they overdo it (especially if they're supposed to have smoked pot), and generally are like some 'Just Say No' advert gone wild. I've been around people high on weed, LSD, 'shrooms, and alcohol, and almost never do they act like tv/movie characters act.

I didn't think they acted very high/drunk at all, just a little giggly, and it was fine.

We are opposites. I absolutely LOVE characters getting drunk. I love it so much. I love their dumb drunk asses and their saying and doing things they wouldn't do sober. Or, conversely, I love the angst of a character who is attempting to drink away their problems. I just vibe with the whole mood of alcohol intoxication so hard. Also, I love when characters do embarrassing things while drunk. I'm fairly sensitive to second-hand embarrassment and really don't enjoy it, but when the characters are drunk I'm jut like yesssss, do the thing, say the thing, future you will be so mortified you could DIE and I can't get enough.

Very much not a fan of characters getting high, though. This one is totally personal bias, because I haaate being stoned, and most of the people in my life toke regularly.

I love both! (The drunk stag night scene in Sherlock was one of the funniest things I saw on TV that whole decade, IMO)

But they're very very different. I partake of both myself, and damn, sometimes it really shows when a scene is written by someone who's never experienced it.

For the most part, I tend to like them. Execution and purpose are vital for them to work effectively though.
