The problem is teenagers don't want to be friends with old hags and creepy old men, and that's what people over 20 are to them. Teenagers think adults who want to be friends with them because of a shared fandom are either pathetic or predators. So. even if you want to make teenage friends in your fandom, you pretty much can't.

As the anon above says, teen and YA fans will immediately label anyone over the age of 20 in their fannish circles as a predator or a pathetic loser, and what adult fan in their right mind would want to socialise in a group that thinks those things about them anyway? (Especially when, to a lot of adult fans, 'pathetic loser' was a communal rallying cry -- we all were, that was what fandom was, and now it's being used to humiliate and other us like the worst kind of high school clique-comedy).

Even if there are shared fannish feels involved, even if there would otherwise be common ground, it's yanked away before it even has a chance.

This, I don't want to hang out with anyone who thinks I am a pathetic loser tbh. Unless they can think the same of themselves and we can laugh at it. Otherwise, nah

If that's the only message you're getting, you're hanging around in the wrong parts of fandom. There are some very loud and annoying teens who believe that in certain loud and annoying spaces (and some adults who agree) but they really aren't the majority. I'm on several fandom discords that mix adults and teens and it's never come up.
