on AO3 its pretty easy to spot younger fans, usually because of the lower-quality writing. and of course from obviously-13-year-olds whining in the comments about stupid things.

I want to reassure you that there are plenty of olds who put out low quality fic and whine about stupid things in comments. There's someone who's been whining about the same stupid things in AO3 comments for one of my fandoms long enough for the whining itself to be a teenager.

oh I know that well enough lol, but i've noticed a specific trend of lower-quality fics popping up everywhere in fandoms more populated by teens.

ayrt
ahaha, I like the kind of comments like yours because there's a lot people can argue about.
I'd just note that my fic tastes changed from when I was a teenager. I read everything back then.

Bu-uut ageism is real. I've been called milf in Genshin and I'm still angry about that.

Yeah! the difference I've noticed in young fandoms is not so much that the overall quality's way worse (Sturgeon's Law applies everywhere) as that stuff that's less, um, polished has more of a chance to get popular. But that's not always a bad thing! A lot of it has good stuff if you get past the lack of polish, and that's what gives new voices and ideas a chance. And conversely polished but boring stuff often gets less traction. Which is good too.

i'd rather have bad fics than no fics, at least. I do applaud less-experienced writers for being comfortable enough to publish their works, I remember how nervous I felt posting for the first time on ao3 in 2019.

ugh, thats so weird, on behalf of all teen genshin fans I apologize for that, not sure if we can ever recover from this embarassment.
