Maybe you can find somebody selling it secondhand? I don’t know anything about this lady except that I really like the aesthetic for her cookware.

I liked it too but I looked at the "Pioneer Woman" brand name and it was an instanope. My spidey senses appear to be well-developed in that regard at least.

That's a pretty straight-forward dress pattern. If you've got a friend with a sewing machine, you could pay for the fabric and have them make one for you.

If you don't have a friend who sews, you could still have someone make it. It'll cost you more, but that's the price of keeping your soul pure from the taint of Drummond.

And pay your friend for her time, too, or you'll end up on canyousewthisforme.

I'm relatively sure that if the dresses are popular enough, there are already similar ones being sold on Amazon by several different manufacturers.

You might be able to find it on Poshmark. You can find freaking anything on Poshmark. The dress in question is a bit iffy, because cheaper items are less worthwhile for sellers, so it's possible you won't find it, but I'd say 50/50 odds it's on there somewhere.

You can pirate clothing all you want, it's called bespoke. You hire a professional tailor/sewist (like me! It's my entire profession. Hit me up) and while it's hard when you're on a budget, picking the right pro can eventually balance out. On one end, you could hire a bridal commissioner whose regular prices are in the area of 40-50/hour but on the other, you could hire someone who wants to work with you and will adjust prices if there's a chance you could end up a regular, and their time spent patterning out your custom clothing means they can then churn out all the copies you want for less. I fall into the latter; I usually do cosplay commissions but I have regular customers who also just want house clothing/lounge/exercise clothing in their sizes. There may be a bit of a cost hurdle at first but over time you're getting a deal. Plus, you also get to dictate colors, patterns, and adding in features like pockets, zippers, etc!

I feel you, if you're on such a tight budget that even bespoke clothing is out of your range, but keep it in mind. Maybe someday if you get gift money or a windfall, you can pull that trigger. It's NOT cheaper than Walmart prices but that's because I'm not working in a sweatshop in Bangladesh.

What person is going to commission a dress to wear just to lounge around the house?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The type of person who made an entire secret about how they wish they could pirate a dress because they like the design but don’t want to give money to a millionaire, of course. What kind of question is that?

Honestly, they sell a ton of this kind of one-size, loose, house-dressy kind of thing at Dollar General. Usually a little more bright-and-bold, color wise, but they're made of super-soft, drapey material and I for sure have at least three to wear around the house and relax in. 20 bucks or less, got at least one on sale for like...3 bucks.

Good luck!
(And good on you - I, too, have not bought stuff because of who made it, and it kinda sucks, but it's kinda awesome, too.)

I owned a really nice pair of suede boots that happened to be Ivanka Trump brand. I bought them way before the Trump presidency was a thing, but I kept wearing them because they were nice and I wasn't going to just throw them out. I had a couple people ask me where I got them, though, which was uncomfortable. :/

Seconding what others have said about checking the pre-loved market for that dress. You can find just about anything pre-loved with a little effort.

Can relate to this. The problems I've had buying knickers that aren't made in China..! But it's got a hippy-ish look that might be findeble on ebay - or try boho, (or hipster if you want to insult yourself.)

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
If you're shopping at walmart, 99% of everything you're buying is putting money into SOME millionaire's - or billionaire's - pocket. Mass market stuff is hugely condensed into a couple big parent companies and they're all owned by 1%. If you want to buy stuff outside that ecosystem, it's going to be expensive. And if you are buying mass market stuff, it doesn't really make sense to deny yourself one item you like from a millionaire's brand vs another just because one is more obnoxious on social media.

That said, this looks pretty generic and you can probably find something similarly light and cute elsewhere, as others have said.

Opp shops! (charity shops) are great. Jumble sales also, if your area still has them.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2022-07-08 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
lol like it matters which multi-millionaire or billionaire your money goes to.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
This is a very good point.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Married a rich dude and has a cooking show" sounds... not that offensive. Does she abuse kids or animals or vote Republican or leave shitty tips or do anything worse than any of the other rich chicks with budget clothing lines? Otherwise, you seem to be really stretching for a reason not to spend the 30$.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, one, I don't think OP said that she was morally wrong, just annoying

Two, it's not that she married a rich dude; it's that she's rich as balls while presenting an image of being an authentic rootsy type of person, and a bunch of ideas about traditional lifestyles and so on and so forth

I mean, she is also the one who used the R word and, when called out on it, doubled down by saying she was 'allowed to' because her brother has Downs'. That's all I needed to know to boycott, and prior to that story coming out, I hadn't been too bothered by her faux-down-home-folksy, I'd watch her show if one of the recipes in the episode sounded good.

I've heard other stories about her since, but nothing surprising from someone with that much money-- a lot of 'not actually down-to-earth' in how she expects people to treat her, and it's not like I know how much is true, just that I expect that kind of ego from a millionaire.

(I mean she does also vote republican, I guess at a food blogger event she made some people uncomfortable interrogating them about their politics? Don't have the link and it was a while back, but again... voting republican is what I expect from rich people in red states.)

That looks... like the most basic summer tunic style dress and I've seen this exact design what feels like countless times over the years, especially with the blue details on the sleeves. I'm sure you'll find it by some other brand (that's probably owned by even richer and more morally corrupt people). But I kinda get what you mean - I saw a type of shower gel in the stores recently which sounded great, scent-wise but it's a brand owned by a ~beauty influencer~ from my country and I can't stand her so I won't buy it.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Does shoplifting not count as pirating dresses? Lol

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?

Like...yes, you can, there's just no way to argue that it isn't ~really~ theft.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my first thought lol.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-08 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like a weird line to draw in the sand when it comes to Walmart sweatshop dresses, but you do you.
