(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)I also feel like because everyone is consuming it super fast or at their own pace (IE. I watched "Squid Game" in the span of a weekend LOL but it was like a week or two after the show debuted, one of my friends watched it a week or two after I did and she watched it over the course of about a week) there's no way to have more nuanced discussions. We all just spit out what we think of the show and list our faves and what we hated. And then we move on.
I enjoyed it more with the intent of one episode released for a certain amount of time (I prefer the one week set-up; one episode a day is more or less just releasing it all at once). It gives room for people to feel less pressure to watch ASAP, and because people aren't actively spending all their time consuming the show, while they're waiting they can theorize on their own or rewatch or talk to other people who have also seen it.
And it's way easier to carry a more engaging conversation with others if it's like "Have you seen episode 3?" and go into details of that one episode rather than "What do you think of the show?" or "Which episode is your favorite?" sorts of questions. I feel like due to binge watching all participating parties tend to sound off on their opinions and only actively listen to others' opinions to see where other parties' opinions align or diverge and only focus on that. It makes me feel like discourse around these shows/franchises are so freaking short lived and disappointing in that I wanted more from the fandom but it feels like you have to be there at the right time with the right people to get the best of it. =( And again, it's so short lived. Like, I was so excited what the Squid Game fandom would look like and...it's...not really a fandom. There are fics and memes and a lot of the actors have their own fanbases/fandoms and that's great but it's like...no wonder fandom sucks now. I recognize I'm an old grump yelling at the kids to get off my lawn, but most shows I want to get into and I find fandom spaces lacking. I miss the old internet. LOL

(Anonymous) 2022-07-10 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)I blame that as much on social media as on streaming though, or maybe more.
