i think they're saying "english" to try and exclude scotland (read the grauniad comment pages sometime, this is fairly common), because while british nationalism is bad and english nationalism is REALLY bad, scottish nationalism is apparently perfectly wonderful

(i don't like london either but i don't think secession is necessarily the solution)
