(Anonymous) 2022-07-15 05:44 am (UTC)(link)Not everyone with big follower accounts on youtube is a celebrity-- the thing about Chris Hemsworth is, if you've never seen one of his movies, you've seen trailers for them, or you've seen him on the cover of People, or he's been a guest you didn't care about on the chat show you watch, or there were pictures of him at a red carpet on your feed because you don't watch Marvel movies but your sister does. There are a lot of actors/musicians I don't care about the work of, and might not know the names of, or be able to match name to face of, but I have a vague awareness of them.
But youtubers whose content doesn't match what I normally watch? Unless they hav a marketing deal that puts their names on shelves in Target, or they get a guest spot on a cooking show, they're not on that radar at the same level of, like... a Chalamet or a Doja Cat, because those people are actual celebrities.
And the youtubers I watch? Are also generally not celebrities, even if they have high follower counts. There's a breakthrough to the mainstream that a lot don't get even if they're successful on youtube, just like a lot of writers can have comfortable levels of success while never becoming James Patterson-- a lot of genre writers just aren't familiar names outside of their little spheres, and they work just as hard at their craft and have their own devotees, but the mainstream recognition isn't there, and that's what makes a celebrity.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-15 06:11 am (UTC)(link)(Actually I think this will happen eventually; it's clearly starting to happen on the lower, more junky parts of the media and entertainment industry)

(Anonymous) 2022-07-15 08:41 am (UTC)(link)Which I sincerely hope they stop immediately. Luke Paul(?) seriously needs to get his attention-whoring dick right off all'a my feeds, effective pretty much since he was born FFS. Fuck that guy and his racist wanna-be ass.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-15 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)Celebrity is definitely relative.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-16 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)Doja Cat. I wouldn't have even known that was a person except for the fact that you referred to them as a celebrity.
