idk, a lot of games have this type of plot point. Mostly 'cause the alternative is playing the story straight, so it's the very-much base attempt to reverse it.

It's been a while since I updated myself in DBD lore, but I think they feel obligated in expanding on things that are better left alone to try and appease the fans with new "twists". I miss when the lore was very short and left a lot to the imagination.
