There's an awful lot of people on YouTube with millions of followers who I've never heard of because the algorithm doesn't recommend them to me (and for that I'm glad).

You can argue whether or not people like that should be called celebrities but calling someone whose name and face would be recognized by millions of people a 'nobody' is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. I have never watched a single one of her videos and yet I still know her name. There are plenty of 'real' celebrities that I couldn't identify even if they were standing right in front of me.
