I don't mind mindless quests depending on the game, I do think achievements should be only for actual challenges or secrets, or they have no reason to be there. 100% loot boxes should go, the problem is that despite the complaints people still give in and buy them anyway, but as long I can play the game without depending on them I can live.

Yeah, I don't understand achievements that are for main story events. I guess completing the main story entirely might be something achievement worthy, but killing the first boss? Acquiring an item you need to recruit someone who is supposed to be in your final party anyway? Or basically anything else, otherwise the story won't continue?

100% agreed. Make it 1000%. I got bored of gaming back when achievements became a thing. Remember when doing things unlocked more story routes? Now you get a fucking dumb pixel trophy. Yaaay! :) Fuck

Thanks for turning my comment into a secret, secret maker!

See, I actually love achievements because I'm a completionist and they give me reasons to keep playing a game once I've already beaten it. I like it best when most of them are things you can't do in a first playthrough.

I really hate games that don't have achievements or NG+ options because to me they feel like a tremendous waste of money. If there's no reason to play the game more than once, why spend the money on it? I want something where I can't get everything on the first go-round. If I can 100% the game on a first playthrough then I'd rather save my money and just watch an LP instead.

NG+ doesn't bother me. If the story/experience was great the first time, chances are I'm going to go through it again.

It's the mindless participation trophy feel I get from "achievements" that are less achievements and just things you probably going to complete without any added effort. Reaching level 10, using X spell for the first time, even dying for the first time (as funny as that is), I don't really consider that noteworthy.

These are my favorite kinds of achievements, just the "oh yeah. I did that" thing, particularly if they have funny names.

i'm 99% sure a lot of the "viewed the opening credits" achievements are a stealth way of getting some crude stats on the number of people playing the game

I'm not a completionist, but getting an achievement for doing something extra is fun, especially on steam where they give you a "3.7% of players achieved this." feel especially great.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
.. Because ... it should be fun to actually play the game? I mean, unpopular opinion here, but I like games that are fun to play, not games that make me play out of FOMO or shame. If I just want the story I will go for an LP anyway.

I mean, sure, but when I'm spending $60 on a game then I'd better be getting $60 worth of entertainment out of it, and to me one single playthrough isn't $60 worth of entertainment even if the game is fun. I want something that's going to make me come back to the game to play it more than once.

OP

Well, for me, if the game was good, I'll play it more than once. The point of the secret is that I don't want a bunch of "achievements" to be a substitute for a good game.

I think about some awful games I've played in the past, and you couldn't give me enough achievements to pick those up again.

This, a hundred times this. Why should I care for a pixel "you did well!" ?
