[Anne of Green Gables]

(Anonymous) 2022-07-19 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same, I can always taste the alcohol in stuff. It has a very distinctive taste. I can even taste it in naturally fermenting fruit juices, like if you have some squeezed orange juice or something that is a few days off and is starting to self-ferment, I can taste even the small amounts in that. I do not understand people who cannot.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Heck, I can't even eat pre-packaged sliced bread because I hate the smell of the alcohol used to mold-proof it. Or is that not really the same thing?

I'm the same way. One of my friends likes suggesting different drinks for me to try because I'm not a fan of alcohol and I can taste it in every single one. So gross.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-19 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just lucky that I like the taste of it. Can always taste it, never minded it. If you don't like it then I can see how that would be a problem however.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-19 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Same!

(Anonymous) 2022-07-20 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Big same. It sucks, because I have never had a beverage with alcohol in it that I thought tasted good. The best I have ever managed is "Hmm this is not gross." Occasionally in the summer I will very slowly drink a single bottle of light Corona, and it doesn't taste good but something about it is pleasurable somehow. And even that was a taste it took me until I was 34 to acquire.

I always heard about how foul Buckley's cough syrup tastes, but I'd never tried it until recently. When I finally did try it, I found it no more foul than a gulp of red wine, and certainly less foul than a shot of hard liquor. Which made me feel very validated in saying that alcohol tastes extremely vile to me, since Buckley's is literally infamous for tasting vile and I found it a walk in the park compared to a shot of Captain Morgans.

IDK I can usually taste the alcohol in stuff, but not if it's something very, very sweet. And I never had redcurrant wine.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If it is anything like blackcurrant wine, then I would think redcurrant would be pretty dry tasting.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never had redcurrant wine either, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't taste like raspberries.

Yeah, this. Obviously hard liquor, wine and even beer are easy. But when you have the perfect ratio of alcohol to the other ingredients in a mixed drink? Sometimes you can't tell.

I always assumed she'd never had either drink before, and even if she'd had something alcoholic before, she was too young to drink alcohol regularly so it's not likely she'd know specifically how to sense alcohol in any drink.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-20 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think she must've had raspberry cordial before because at one point she says this is the best raspberry cordial she's ever tasted?

I can smell it as soon as a glass gets close to my face and since it smells like a freaking dumpster in summer, I don't want that going in my mouth.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the drink. Some elaborate fruity cocktails that are well-blended - no, I really can't taste the alcohol in them at all. Others, of course, I can. I don't mind the taste of alcohol at all so it doesn't matter (I like to sip good Scotch by itself sometimes) but yes, sometimes some people really cannot taste it.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-20 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who only recently learned that cordials can refer to a juice concentrate and not just a sweet liqueur, I always thought she was having a sweet alcoholic drink and was too young/inexperienced with it to know the difference (hell, I don't know that I'd be able to tell the difference because wine smells like paint thinner to me and liqueurs aren't far off, though sometimes I can smell the fruit in them.)

She might have never tasted alcohol before, though?

Anne of Green Gables secret! Yes! I can always taste alcohol, but not everyone can. And it is probable that the wine was fairly weak.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC, she noticed it tasted different than what she was used to, but chalked it up to recipe differences. And she was a kid from a teetotal family and wouldn't know what alcohol smelled/tasted like.

Also this was her best friend and they were having a "grown-up" party. Even if she thought it tasted bad at first, she probably would have drank it anyway to be polite. And once it started going to her head it probably tasted a lot better, lol.

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like liquor in any form. I can taste (and smell) the alcohol in wine and would not drink. But if someone hadn't had any wine or alcohol before, I wouldn't expect them to be able to identify it. And they are, like, eleven.

I went back and looked at the chapter 'Diana Is Invited to Tea with Tragic Results' and while Diana had clearly had raspberry cordial before (Mrs. Rachel Lynde's to be exact), it's also pretty clear that these were homemade drinks and there can be a lot of variation in recipes ("It's ever so much nicer than Mrs. Lynde's although she brags of hers so much. It doesn't taste a bit like hers." is the direct quote).

Now, I have no idea what red currant tastes like, if it tastes anything like raspberry. However, the power of suggestion should not be discounted, in both the appearance and what is said about something, (if someone is told something bright red is raspberry-flavored, they might think the can taste it, even if there isn't any raspberry there). Also, if the red currant wine was made particularly sweet, which I don't see any reason why it couldn't have been, some people have a difficult time picking up on much more than just sweet.

Wait, there are people who claim they can't taste alcohol in things? Like, anything?

I've had things that I knew were alcoholic where the taste was mostly disguised by the sweetness and strong flavors, but most alcoholic drinks are obvious, even wines and cocktails. I love a particular winery that makes their stuff from other fruits rather than grapes and it still doesn't taste like juice.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-20 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can always taste the alcohol much more strongly than anything else so I don't drink. It's just nasty. And I've tried various things where people swore you can't taste it! I feel like I'm a cursed version of a supertaster for one thing only. But it's definitely not true for everyone or they wouldn't be getting me to try those drinks!

(Anonymous) 2022-07-20 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't drink alcohol because it tastes like ass, if you can get past the smell, which - how could anyone have evolved to wanting alcohol in their body? It smells like literal poison. The hard stuff, anyway.

The one time I went out with friends and had a drink I got a Vodka Cranberry and while I couldn't taste the alcohol in the sip itself, the immediate burn in my mouth after each swallow kind of tipped me off. But I mean, the book is pretty clear that Diana waaaay overdid it (Marilla even tsks at how rude it was for Diana to drink so much of anything), so it must have been incredibly weak considering she didn't seem to get very far past the tipsy phase.

I don't see why not?
People are being overdramatic over alcohol in the comments, but everyone taste things wildly different.
Also one time when I was young my uncle gave me a beer instead of non-alcoholic somewhat similar to beer drink and I did taste the deference but I couldn't tell what exactly was different. (Yeah, my uncle was a massive dick)

Why do I get the feeling that several people ITT are the type who judge people drinking once in a while as borderline alcoholics? I don't even drink a lot myself but damn, some people are being overly dramatic here.
