Hmm.

I don't like liquor in any form. I can taste (and smell) the alcohol in wine and would not drink. But if someone hadn't had any wine or alcohol before, I wouldn't expect them to be able to identify it. And they are, like, eleven.

I went back and looked at the chapter 'Diana Is Invited to Tea with Tragic Results' and while Diana had clearly had raspberry cordial before (Mrs. Rachel Lynde's to be exact), it's also pretty clear that these were homemade drinks and there can be a lot of variation in recipes ("It's ever so much nicer than Mrs. Lynde's although she brags of hers so much. It doesn't taste a bit like hers." is the direct quote).

Now, I have no idea what red currant tastes like, if it tastes anything like raspberry. However, the power of suggestion should not be discounted, in both the appearance and what is said about something, (if someone is told something bright red is raspberry-flavored, they might think the can taste it, even if there isn't any raspberry there). Also, if the red currant wine was made particularly sweet, which I don't see any reason why it couldn't have been, some people have a difficult time picking up on much more than just sweet.

I'm assuming the wine wasn't particularly strong, since Diana drank a lot and was stumbling drunk, but not projectile vomiting.

All of this, exactly.
