Have you not noticed the entire "exclude" section of AO3's sidebar? It's not perfect by any stretch, and there is definitely a problem with people over-tagging and not tagging consistently, but if you really think FFN makes it easier to exclude unwanted criteria, I'm thinking you must have missed a pretty enormous chunk of AO3's interface.

A surprisingly large amount of any "I don't like site XYZ because [very detailed reasons]" seems to be based on snapshots from multiple years ago.
