You don't have to like AO3 if you don't want to, but the specific things that you say here are ridiculously wrong.

Have you not noticed the entire "exclude" section of AO3's sidebar? It's not perfect by any stretch, and there is definitely a problem with people over-tagging and not tagging consistently, but if you really think FFN makes it easier to exclude unwanted criteria, I'm thinking you must have missed a pretty enormous chunk of AO3's interface.

Criticize AO3 if you want, but to point out those specific things and say FF.net does them better just seems really weird and wrong.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-21 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think AO3 is perfect, but it is a lot better than FF.net.

I think I might understand your problem though? Usually it's easy to filter (out) stuff until I get what I want. Partly because I'm not that picky, or the fandoms aren't that big.

Recently though I wanted to read fic about a specific character in the MCU, and well... Try looking in the 'Bucky Barnes' tag for fic that's actually about him and doesn't just feature him as one of a dozen other characters. Ship tags could maybe narrow it down? Not by much though, and you'd miss the gen ones. For ships there's a search 'otp:true', but the same thing doesn't exist for characters and even if it did, how many fics are tagged with 1 character?

So yeah, I am the first to sing AO3's praises (I have a monthly donation set up), but this one thing is annoying. It's oddly enough FF.net's lack of options for tagging/filtering that solves this problem.

YYMV, but I love AO3 because of the tag system and that so much of the writers there (at least in my corner) are actually self aware.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-21 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The search function on ff.net is atrocious, so I assume you're trolling based off of that alone.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like the person who wrote this secret has some kind of heretofore undiscovered condition which causes the sufferer to be good-bad quality blind.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's really not AO3's fault that you're apparently too stupid to use it.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I like AO3 well enough, and I kind of prefer it over FFN. Echoing a lot of statements from above -- excluding things, tag and relationship specific tags, etc. The search functions can help yield results.

I will give you a point on the giant tag walls, because it's annoying AF when I specifically search for fandom X, pairing A/B, and it yields a kinktober 2017/collections/drabbles etc. With 25 other fandoms and pairings. I know there's probably ways to avoid this, but it's annoying to be hit with it at all. I'll also admit to scrolling on by because I am too lazy to modify my search query. So there's that. But (and mind you, I use AO3 on mobile) I think you should revisit the site. It sounds like you visited back in 2008 or something. I certainly have no use of commands etc.

I'm here for tips on making ff.net easily searchable! I have...very much not found that to be the case.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
As a reader and someone who has been reading fanfics way before AO3 existed (mainly on FFnet and livejournals as well as other specialised sites), I have to strongly disagree base on my experience. Maybe yours is different, but I feel you're more the exception than the rule.

What fandoms are you in?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta ask, because while I have seen some fics that are a wall of tags and have every character tagged, they are maybe 1-3 for each results page, which means that 90% aren't. Unless you have a different definition than I do for wall of tags. But really, many of the wall of tags fics that I see are ficlets or drabbles for a bunch of different fandoms with all of the ships and relevant tags for each one, which means that it gets completely out of hand after a certain amount of ficlets, so I wouldn't mind if there was a cap of some sort.

Also, there are ways to exclude things, ratings, categories, common tags, etc. are easy, but also specific things aren't that hard. Just go to the sort and filter box on the right side and go to the Exclude section and x the ones you don't want included or type in the Other tags to exclude box or go to the Search within results and type in -authorname or -'specific word phrase'.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's ridiculously easy to filter tags on AO3?? You can customize your search to your heart's content, and find a wide range of fics. Whenever I have to go to FF.net looking for older fandoms without much presence on ao3, I find it impossible to actually find what I'm looking for. And I was reading on ff.net back before ao3 came along! But I do NOT miss the total lack of usable tags/organization. I mean, can you even filter by pairing?

There are some good fics that made their home there, I'm not coming here to hate on the writers using ff.net, I fondly remember some of the ones I read there, but on the whole... there are a lot of good fics on AO3, too. And while finding high quality might not be as simple as filtering the tagging system to personal preference-- I wish it was!-- there are plenty of good writers putting out consistent work.

FF.net is littered with fucking ads every paragraph these days. And even in it's golden days of the 2000s it was shit at dealing with the bullies who made accounts just to give people copypasta flames, and bragged about breaking the TOS in their fucking bio.

Also the uploading process is still stupidly complicated. Like I can figure it out sure. But it's much more convoluted than it needs to be.

Ao3 may not be perfect but it's much easier, it's made by a group with a passion for fanworks so they give a damn. And it lets you nip abusive or just uselessly whiny "I dont like this delete it" type comments in the bud.

I don't need to defend AO3--it won a Hugo for its tagging system, but FF.net? Really? I can never find anything over there. Plus, 50 chapter fic and no way to download the whole thing except by using a 3rd party tool, okay. FF can thank god for that precious German programmer.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
HOW is it easier to find specific things on FFN? Like, the only times I have success is searching rare pairings.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
You really don’t know anything about AO3 or how to use it, huh? I hate the walls of tags but I’d hate it even more if suddenly rules were imposed against them. Like it or not, those freeform tags are part of the creative expression and absolutely shouldn’t be restricted.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I really want to know what fandoms you're in 'cause that hasn't been my experience at all. Sometimes people don't tag their shit properly or they list a pairing that only appears for two lines, but I can filter out all the things I don't like and still find something decent to read. I was on FF.net back in the early 2000s and I found it annoying to use as both a reader and a writer.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
lmao, I could have sworn that last part was written by me 20 or so years ago, except AO3 didn't exist then and FFN has never really impressed me. Hate to tell you, but that problem's not limited to AO3. You're gonna have to get used to it... or get used to people telling you to get over yourself because it's just fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
the tag walls have definitely gotten worse since more tumblr authors started moving over. i'm not shaking my cane at the kids on my lawn, tumblr straight up has a different culture around tagging and the types of tags used there simply aren't useful on ao3 and actively make the user experience worse. if anybody's made a guide to newbie author tagging, i haven't seen it go viral, but something like that on the website itself would probably really help.

tl;dr it's the users, not the site mechanics, for one particular issue.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes but there's a difference between useful criticism and just plain making things up, as you are here.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-22 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You're mad they let authors block specific commenters.
