I hate books that end with a sequel hook. Dangling threads are fine, but I get so annoyed when the book ends in what feels like the middle of the story with the characters still in peril.

Do not read Fellowship of the Ring. Seriously, just don't.

It's effective on rare occasions. But yeah, for the most part it seems lazy. I think people mistake ending on an ambiguous(ish) note "to leave the audience wanting more" for "leave the biggest plot tease in the world so that the reader HAS to read the next book" and the second option most times annoys me because what was the point of the first book? If given a beginning and a middle I expect an end. Doesn't mean everything needs to be tied up in a neat bow but the characters have to have grown or changed in some effective way. If the plot is unfinished, it's a fucking disappointment that took me nowhere. Like, I don't know how to explain it well but yeah, I think I feel you OP.
