Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2022-07-24 02:56 am (UTC)(link)all the "depicting rape" arguments in ASOIAF on both sides I've heard annoy me.
1. there's zero reason you have to depict sexual violence to understand medieval/renaissance limitations on women's power. you can just make it clear that everyone understands the threat.
2. rape being a serious, even mortal, crime "back then" doesn't mean highborn women weren't blamed and their rapists and groomers weren't kept in power and that it wasn't a constant consideration in how women operated.
3. please stop saying "in that time" like rape isn't wildly prevalent RIGHT NOW in many armed conflicts RIGHT NOW perpetuated by soldiers in "civilized" countries RIGHT NOW.
4. depicting all threats to a person's power is relevant to a show about power in a way that depicting the fear of a shitting disease or hairy armpits when that isn't a sign of undesirableness isn't.
5. these books have zero historical allusory coherency, so when is "back then" exactly? just admit this is as much about projecting your fantasy of actual history as much as it is about injecting fantasy into history.
I'm mad that the showrunners even decided to mention it. now everyone's pre-gaming their brainless arguments and defenses.
