AYRT - I was OBSESSED with S6 while it was first airing, because I was an angsty, self-harming 14-year-old, so of course I naturally clicked very hard with S6's whole "everyone is wildly self-destructive" vibe. Twenty years on, the obsessive fervor is long gone, but I still like S6 a lot--maybe the most of all the seasons. However, I can also see both sides of the argument. I can see why a lot of people didn't like S6 at the time--not so much because it was dark (BTVS was often dark), but because the narrative ethos felt distinctly different.

As it happens, I actually prefer Marti's narrative ethos to Joss's, but IMO they both have their weak spots, and I can understand how, at the time, the tonal shift that the show underwent on an almost cellular level during S6 was jarring for a lot of people who had loved the show for five years already and didn't particularly want a different vibe.
