i think i would have been fine with that if it had been clear that his life was really just miserable because of his choice to defect, but it wasn't. like a dude becoming super bitter and nasty because he gave up a great gig to atone for his horrible actions, that's something i would find narratively appealing even if that doesn't make him any better of a guy. but it's still very unclear what he really gave up by defecting. like his life probably wasn't *great* during the 11 years between voldemort's death and when he started making moves again, but by all accounts he was left alone and could have had it so much worse if he'd stuck with the death eaters, especially considering that he probably would have been stuffed into the magic prison or had to go on the run
