You shouldn't need to ship or slash to be in fandom, fandom just means you enjoy something.

Nah. I've read 30 books this year and enjoyed 25. I've joined the actual fandom for maybe one or two of them. To say "I have joined 25 fandoms this year" because I enjoyed 25 books, 22 of which I put down and never thought of again, implies something totally different from the reality.

OP's secret as stated is silly but these reactions are just as silly in the opposite direction.

Your concept of "joining a fandom" is NOT the same as mine. I make fanworks (fic, art, even cosplay) for series I barely enjoyed when inspiration hits me, ie. when I relate to ONE character (and some of them are ridiculously well-received, even more than those of series I love ...) and don't even consume fanworks of these series myself. But there are series I consume fanwork of and may even try to make my own that I never even WATCHED but I like the characters' dynamics or actors for instance.

For those series I LOVE I consider myself a part of the fandom even if there isn't one and even if I never/seldom consume/create fanworks, because just squeeing (or wanting to squee) enthusiastically with likeminded individuals IS the fandom experience for me.

This definitely.
