Wow, no. Anyone who is a fan is in the fandom. It is the gatekeepers like you, OP, who ruin fandom for everyone.

I'd disagree with that. I'm a fan of several final fantasy games because I like the games, but wouldn't consider myself part of the fandom because while I know the fandoms exist, I have no interest in engaging with them or engaging with the games further than playing the games. I'd say calling me someone who is in the FF fandom is inaccurate at best and implies certain things that are not true. Would you claim people are in the fandom when they themselves do not?

Not wanting to claim that you are a fan of something you only "moderately enjoy" in your head isn't the issue, gatekeeping others is.

Like this so much. Fandom is not a job, there shouldn't be a 9-5 work hour requirement/output expectation to be a fan of something.
