Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2022-07-27 01:15 am (UTC)(link)However, I don't think very many people like that - whose whole engagement with the text is watching the movie, doing a single video about it, and then has no engagement at all with Star Wars outside of that - actually exist. And in practice, most people who we're talking about as being "not a real fan" do participate in fannish activity more than that. If they didn't show up in fannish spaces, there'd be no reason for gatekeepers to dislike them.
(And also, OP is wrong about a hell of a lot of other stuff, obviously)
Re: SA
(Anonymous) 2022-07-27 03:02 am (UTC)(link)Who is the "we" you are talking about? If you read what I wrote, I never suggested anyone is or is not a "real fan." Everyone I am talking about is a "real fan." All it takes to be a "real fan" is to be a fan of something.
However, being a fan of something, and being "in the fandom" are different things and obviously mean different things when people say them. One is not better than the other. They're just different. I am a passing fan of a lot of things that I am not in the fandom of, and I would bet so are you. This is not bad or good; this means we simply engage with the meta and the fandoms of those things differently, and I don't feel it's gatekeeping to make that point to people who are saying "all fans are in fandom" because we're not.
There is plenty of media where I have consumed it, liked it, written a glowing opinion of it, then expressed opinions to a group of friends or posted it somewhere, then never engaged in the actual fandom. Have you never done this? Do you really believe this is that uncommon? I would say this is one of the most common ways of engaging with media there is!
