Favorite types of horror

What are your favorite types of horror media to watch or read?

Personally, I'm more into suspense-focused horror than gorefest movies. And I love scifi/horror and fantasy/horror media.

Spooky foggy weird horror. Not gore, not jumpscares.

Unfortunately in practice this means I'm mostly just not a horror fan.

Psychological thrillers, more arthouse type horrors, if I'm in the right mood grimy body horror specific horrors, sometimes I love tongue-in-cheek horror/comedies (The Faculty, Happy Deathday, Shaun of the Dead), dark murder comedies, mystery thrillers/who-dun-its

I only really enjoy horror when it's an element in a story that isn't predominantly a horror story. I absolutely love horror elements in non-horror. That electric zing of dread or terror or repulsion that just hits so hard.

But when it comes to actual horror stories, they're very much an acquired taste that I only ever half-acquired. And it's hard for me to say what my "favorite" types are, because the problem is that if it's done well, then I'm not going to enjoy it at all.

But I guess if I go by the horror movies that I think of as good once I'm far enough away from them to be able to think of them with any degree of equanimity, then I tend to favor supernatural/preternatural horror with a strong psychological element (e.g. It Follows, Occulus, Rec).

I love horror movies but think it’s a genre hard to get right. I also don’t like super gory stuff but I’m not sure what I think makes good or bad horror?? Maybe it’s having some kind of emotional core, idk. Some of my favorites are The Orphanage, Get Out, Us, The Shining, Oculus, Skeleton Key, 1408, and The Blair Witch Project.

I like when the story takes the forefront, and the horror itself dependent on that, not the other way around.

I seem to be into the psychological horrors and the paranormal stuff a lot. Gore is okay, though sometimes it's so goofy and over-the-top that I can't take it seriously.

It has gotten be the melodrama and monsters variation of the horror genre. Think old Hammer Horror.
