Irene Adler in pretty much everything I’ve ever seen.

This, absolutely.

(Although I did like what they did in Elementary. It was very different from the original character, but for once I thought it was actually an interesting twist.)

Yes, but especially the Sherlock version

Maybe the worst choice made by any adaptation, ever

I've taken to thinking of her as Irene Norton, because that's who she chose to be. All the male-fantasy versions of her are such an insult to the character, for sure.

Best Irene Adler is the Wishbone version.

Fair. I actually loved her character in Sherlock, but I hate what they did with her character in Sherlock. I'm more than fine with a version of Irene that is coldly brilliant, and merciless, and entirely self-interested (and a sex-worker)--as long as she still gets the upper hand on Sherlock Holmes through primarily her intelligence, and isn't implied to have fallen for him, FFS.

My favorite Irene is in the Watson & Holmes comics that came out a few years ago (set in modern-day New York, almost all the main characters are Black). She's a singer (!!!, why do so many adaptations not let her sing anymore?) whose main interest is getting away from her creepy record-mogul ex, keeping the rights to her own music, and starting a new life with the guy she really loves, a street musician in recovery.
