The easiest job for a newbie is handing out water cups at rest stops, chances are that someone will be able to give you a lift. Especially since they will be picking up the garbage on the way back too. Volunteer for that. Or just email them, say you want to volunteer for something easy and you need a lift to do it, most events are desperate for any volunteers. It is usually pretty darn easy. Don't worry about flaking out, every volunteer event is used to people flaking out on them. Especially newbies, it is practically expected.

Thank you so much for responding! This is something I want to do so badly, and while the application forum don't seem have those listed specifically, there are enough options I can easily work with. I honestly think I'm just going to go for it. It's a once in a lifetime chance, and even if it ends up coming around next year by some ridiculous chance, at least then I'll have more experience on what to expect when I offer to volunteer again! <3
