Hmm.

I've seen people here mention it as _a_ reason why Hollywood might shy away from explicit LBGQT content, which is not the same thing as people believing it's _the only_ reason.

It is an easy excuse for Disney to not have to do stuff that Disney would rather not do already. They'd have to work harder to justify their LGBT-phobia, otherwise.

Disney finally allowed some LGBT content in Lightyear at least.

Interestingly (or strangely), the wlw kiss in The Rise of Skywalker (which would have been easy to cut out) was not censored in China.

I think there have been plenty of posts over the years that do amount to saying that China is the only reason, though. Usually said in a tone of "Well, what do you expect, of course studios can't include gay content, Because China."

If they wanna sell movies in China, that is true. When it comes to movies that they are not selling in China, then it becomes more questionable. For the biggest of the big blockbusters, the ones where the studios think they need China (and a bunch of other homophobic shitholes), then they can't. Whether they should or should not be making those sort of movies is another question.

The Chinese market is one reason for them not to include gay content in movies, but it's not the only possible reason. It's probably not the case that Hollywood studios would be banging down the doors to include tons of gay content in everything were it not for China.

given the kerfluffle over Lightyear in the Middle East, "China" is just the recent trendy shorthand for "all those countries with some kind of moral law that leads them to ban western movies for being too gay." To be fair, China has actually banned media from the west, but they're not the only one who has. It's just really easy to hate fascists, especially if they've recently been forcing their own people to self-censor their own books and comics.

censorship is censorship no matter who does it and why; Lightyear was sort of a moment of positive for Disney being willing to say "oh, you don't want to show our movie? well, fuck it, I don't care." Time will tell if they continue to do so instead of using this one moment for kudos because they could afford to go on without Yemen's audience.

People also focus on China because it's big and has a huge population, so equals a lot of revenue.

My overall feeling on this is just fuck Disney, at this point.

I don't think it's that straightforward in assigning blame, but that's me.

This.

People are talking about Disney, but honestly the first example that comes to mind is Brent Spiner's character in Independence Day 2.

Secret OP here! First of all: thanks for making my secret (though the aesthetic feels weird at best, lol, no I am not a chinationalist freak).

My point was exactly this: it's easy to find ways to criticize China particularly if you are a nationalist US entity or person and hate it for other reasons. But I don't see how China has been influencing the amount of LGBTQIAA+ content in recent blockbusters at all - if anything there has been more of it than ever ...

Is China particularly LGBTQIAA+ positive? No. But is it the Yemen or any other country (of which there are dozens) based on religious fundamentalism that is very anti-LGBTQIAA+ people? No. The presence of such contents in blockbusters aimed at kids read as a threat to THOSE countries for obvious reasons. China could not care less - if they don't like it, they will censor (which is as easy as removing 2 minutes of movie) and shrug tfa ... Which they have been doing for a while anyway. Which, incidentally, the US did enough of in the past too.

Sure China has a lot of people so it is a big market. But in terms of revenue and individual economic power surely NA and EU still matter more. So Hollywood has more reasons to try to please these rich markets (which also have fair shares of conservatives / religious fanatics) but of course it'd be better to not alienate every other market either since the purpose of a blockbuster is to sell heavily.

The end result are movies like Lightyear that briefly mention a gay marriage now that it is legal in these (NA/most of EU) countries, which is enough to bring in that pink money and make Disney seem LGBTQIAA+ positive to these markets, but can be easily censored (just by redubbing/cutting 1-2 minutes of movie) in countries where censorship of LGBTQIAA+ issues is usual. And global backlash delivers a clear message: this is the perfect(ly calculated) amount, people who want more or less than that are just the extremists.

Setting personal feelings on this subject aside, in short: for people to place the blame on China for lack of LGBTQIAA+ content in blockbuster Hollywood movies IMO is either ill intentioned or silly.

Also: fuck Disney :)
