As a queer person myself...what? How is that a bad look? Why not just get some queer rep for the male avatars too?? (and I mean...look at Roku. Just saying.)

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Me=Person who posted this in the secrets you don't want to make thread.

Exactly. As of now there is no canonical queer rep for the male Avatars. This can change in the future, though.

I've seen enough media where the sole LGBT rep given focus is wlw.

(Note: I posted this secret before the book revealed anything about Yangchen, and it seems there is zero pairings for her)

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT I mean I understand the annoyance at "only" having wlw rep and not mlm, as is becoming especially common in media aimed at younger people, but how is that a "bad look" as opposed to just an annoying trend?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
DA
Lesbian women are seen as safer then gay men when it comes to media (women and men are statistically more likely to respond positively to w/w content than m/m), that and there's the historical issue of women in leadership and militant roles being stereotyped as 'butch' and/or man-hating.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a bit dodgy when so many shows and movies give the LGBT representation solely to women. It feels like they are trying to say being gay is still icky only without coming all the way out and saying it.

This. Also lesbian pairings are often objectified for the male gaze, where male pairings are seen as "eww, buttsex"

Sozin definitely had feelings for Roku, but I don’t think Roku felt the same way.

I headcanon Kuruk as grey-ace, but I guess that’s not really helpful. Us aros and aces don’t really make as big a splash when it comes to queer rep.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't Sozin invent homophobia in Avatarland according to one of the Korra comics?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-01 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like the sort of thing a spurned gay dictator would do, tbh.

I mean

You have a huge falling out with your childhood sweetheart and have a massive temper problem.......

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I don't quite have enough context here because (1) how many avatars are there total that are given significant focus? it's not like there's a lot of them, right? I think the kind of pattern you're talking about is much less of a concern when you're only talking about 2 or 3 characters total (2) was this a major concern about the character going into the books?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking at the wiki, there are quite a couple that are given a decent amount of focus. There's 10 named ones, 7 of which are guys. 3 of them explicitly have female love interests, 3 just don't have much lore and one doesn't touch on it.
Out of the 3 women, 2 are explicitly queer and Yangchen would be the third.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But how much focus are those characters actually given? Like just because they're named, does that mean that they're given focus?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... I literally just told you. 3 of them don't have much lore, 3 had enough lore for their love interest to be explicitly stated and one had a lot of focus (the first avatar) but did not touch on it.

Crack theory: Raavi just really likes boobs so all the Avatars do too.

I honestly just took it to mean that the avatar just skews towards women.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-01 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was also my assumption too. Makes sense that way ?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
That also has some skeevy undertones tbh. Women as romantically and sexually desirable while men aren't is an old heteronormative and patriarchal trope.

That really is a stretch, when dealing with a character who is the same essence passed through several bodies...individual attractions are not saying others are undesirable, as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-01 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Nayrt - I don't know if that holds up though, the avatar isn't the same person even if they are connected to the previous avatars. Aang very famously went against every single previous avatar he could get his hands on & his predecessor was very unlike him. It doesn't really make sense to me that romantic attraction would be the thing that carries over when personality can vary so wildly.

I don't agree it's particularly patriarchial whatever-anon-said, I just don't think it's a good explanation.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like this could easily be solved by making more female Avatars. But in until they do, I sort of agree with you, although I wouldn't mind if it was said or implied that she was aro or ace. That's not to say those aren't LGBTQ, but it's not the same look as "all female Avatars were attracted to other women because f/f is safe and kid-friendly unlike m/m."

(Anonymous) 2022-08-01 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
That is some quality fivehead going on in that pic.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-01 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
it's shaved

She's a monk, so she keeps it shaved.
