I hate that "the twist" has become the sole measure to judge how cool a movie is right now. Just tell me a fucking story and don't worry about a twist.

This. I want movies that are rewatchable. If they are only good for the twist, then once you know the twist the joy of watching is lost.

In my mind, a good twist is like in Empire Strikes Back because while the twist is awesome, the movie is also awesome even without that. So even when you know the twist, you are still happy to watch the movie many more times.

This. It's also a way for people to act like their movie (or TV show, or book) is so complex and complicated and therefore that makes it "smart" when, no, really, it's just layers upon layers of confusing nonsense.

Twists can be done very well in media, but usually that's because the writers followed the age-old mantra of "Keep it simple, stupid".

Yes! Even The Sixth Sense (which was very much about the twist and possibly the one that kicked off this trend) was a good movie otherwise and rewards re-watching.
